SPORTS NEWS:
The
varsity baseball team took the
second game of a two game series last night against third ranked Zionsville in
another big HCC victory. The
Bulldogs got behind 2-0 in
the first but snuck in a run in the second to make the score 2-1. It
stayed the same until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Bulldogs came to
life. Senior Logan Coughlin led off the inning with a solo HR to tie the
game at two. Senior Jeremy Jones singled and Isaac Sampen followed up
with a two-run bomb to leftfield. Sam Sampen followed the HR with a
double off the right field fence and senior David Oliger drove him in on a big
two out single up the middle. Sophomore Ty McCoy pitched an amazing five innings
allowed only two runs and struck out seven Zionsville Eagles before senior
pitcher Jake Weimer came in to close the door. Weimer pitched a scoreless
sixth and allowed one run in the seventh to secure the Bulldogs 13th victory of
the year. Ty McCoy moves to 4-0 on the season and Jake Weimer collects
his second save. The Bulldogs will take a day off before going to Fishers
on Thursday and coming back home for senior night on Friday.
The
junior varsity baseball team
defeated Zionsville last night 8-5. Sam Comer got the win on the mound
throwing a complete game, striking out three and walking one. Offensively
the Dogs bats were hot, combining for 13 hits. Tyler Westrich, Tyler
Hudson, and Nathan Haynes each had multiple hit nights. Tyler Houston
chipped in two RBIs. The Dogs are back in action on Thursday at Fishers.
The Lady Bulldogs track team beat all but one team last evening
at the Plainfield Sectional. Despite some strong performances on the
night and many making it out to regional competition, the Bulldogs came up
short against a well- balanced Avon team 123 to 107. Sectional champions on the
night were Sibong Ncube in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.54 and Laura Bess in the
1600 and 3200 meters in 5:07 and 11:23. Congratulations to Laura and Sibong on
great performances! Others who made it out to Regionals by placing in the top
four were Sydney Lesko, KJ Gaerke, Cassidy Brown, and Rachel Smith second in
the 4x800 meter relay, Rocky Sulkoske fourth in the 100 meter hurdles, Tavon
McCollum second in the 400 meters, Florence Akinribade, Briana Smith,
Ncube, and Sulkoske second in the 4x100 meter relay, Kerry Devney and
Jolori Schafer third and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles, Akinribade third
in the 200 meters, Rachel Smith second in the 800 meters, Lesko fourth in the
3200 meters, and McCollum, Morgan Weller, Lauren Markovich, and Sulkoske
second in the 4x400 meter relay. Julia Popenfoose placed sixth place in
the 1600 while Gaerke placed seventh in the 800. On the field events
side, Devney placed seventh in the long jump and Schafer placed seventh in
the pole vault. The ladies travel to West Lafayette on Tuesday, May 22nd to
compete in the Regional meet.
The
boys’ golf team improved its record
to 9-2 last night with victories over Franklin Central and Speedway 150 to 172
to 179 respectively. Meet medalist, and low score for the Bulldogs, was Derek
Hettmansperger who fired an even-par 36. Also contributing to the lowest team
score of the year were Austin Winings, Austin Crouch, and Tyler Corder, who
each shot two over par 38.
Monday,
the boys’ golf team improved 21
shots and two places from last year’s finish in the Hoosier Crossroads
Conference Tournament. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was junior Austin
Crouch, who carded a 76 and earned a spot on the All-Conference team.
Contributing to the team total was Austin Winings who shot 78, Alec Brown fired
an 81, and Derek Hettmansperger had an 82.
Saturday,
the boys golf team shot 322 and
finished ninth of
18 teams in the Sollman Invitational at the Trophy Club golf course. Leading
the way for the Bulldogs was the tournament medalist Austin Winings who
finished with a five under-par 67. The keys to Austin’s success were hitting
fairways and greens in regulations, and no penalty strokes. Rounding out the
team’s score was Derek Hettmansperger with an 81, Austin Crouch shot 84, and
Alec Brown carded a 90.
Tuesday night the varsity
softball team celebrated its eight seniors in their game against Franklin
Central. Kirsten Bartlett, Sarah Callis, Chelsea Conover, Astrid
Koose, Tori Martin, Katie Mingus, Alex Shipley, and Krystal Shirrell were
honored for their time with the program. Despite a particularly
rough first inning which led to a 14-3 loss, Bartlett finished her
last home game with three hits, including two doubles and all three
RBIs. Katie Mingus and Chelsea Conover also finished the game with a hit each.
Carlie Weaver did a nice job holding the offensive-powered Flashes to
one run in three innings. The girls will finish up their regular
season at Decatur Central on Wednesday and the Crawfordsville Invitational
on Saturday.
The
JV softball team had an exciting
when last night coming back and beating Franklin
Central 10-8. Franklin Central got off to a great start getting eight
runs in the first three innings. However, the ladies fought hard and
inched their way back into the game. In the fifth inning the ladies took the
lead by one. Despite
having a tough night on the mound Lindsey Stahl finished strong with three big
strikeouts in the last two innings to seal the win. Kyrsten
Wagoner, Candice Williams, Natalie Kroll each had a double. Kelsey
Goad also had a great night getting two big hits. Great
job ladies!!!
The freshman softball team added another win last night after traveling
to Roncalli. Several girls contributed hits, RBIs and good defensive skills.
Brooklyn Remke led the way with three hits, while Erin Bartlett, Gabby Hall,
Chandler Tillotson, Kelsey Reinhardt, and Karly Dickison added two hits each.
The last freshman game is tonight at home at 5:00 against rival Avon.
